12 Ways to Integrate Email and Social Media

EVER have the feeling email marketing and social media were being set up to be enemies? It comes up when the social media people say stuff like “email is dead.” Then the email marketing people snap back with “social media never earns any ROI.”
Everybody just take a deep breath, okay? Email and social don’t have to fight. In fact, they can support each other beautifully. And the more you see all the ways they work together, the more it looks like they’re the perfect complement.
If you’d like to get more out of your email marketing, and get more out of your social media marketing, try these ideas for blending them together.

1. Include your most popular social media posts in your email messages.

Want more content for your newsletters? Social is the perfect solution to this. Not only do you have a great stream of content to pick from, but you’ve also got sharing stats. You know which posts and images have performed best. So use just the best-performing content in your emails. It just might kick your click-through rates up, too.

3. Include social sharing buttons in your emails.

You can set your emails up to be shared online – just like any other type of content.

Bonus: You can add “click to tweet” calls to action, too. These are pre-formatted tweets based on a sentence or two of your email content.

4. Ask people to follow you on social media when they sign up for your list, and when they unsubscribe.

Know that final page your new subscribers see after they’ve confirmed their email addresses? That’s a great place to ask them to follow you on social media. People tend to be really enthusiastic when they first sign up – they’re into you, and so if you offer them other ways to stay in touch, they’ll probably say yes.
Here’s how Marie Forleo does it:
Conversely, when people unsubscribe, it’s good to ask them to follow you on social. Why? Because most people unsubscribe simply because they’re getting too many emails. If you offer them another way to stay in touch – without clogging up their inbox – they might say yes.

5. Announce your about-to-be-published email newsletter in your social media posts.

This is a great way to build your list, plus it gives you more content for your social media feeds. If you’re willing to kick things up a notch, add a short article or other content to your emails that’s not available anywhere else. Mention that exclusive content when you announce your newsletter on social. This gives people more of an incentive to sign up.

6. Add an email sign up button to your Facebook page.

This is about a ten-minute set-up, but it can net you a whole new stream of email subscribers.

7. Build your email list with Facebook’s “Lead Ads”.

Lead ads are an awesome way to get more subscribers. There is one hassle, though – you’ll have to manually extract the email addresses from Facebook… unless you’ve gotLeadsTunnel. Then the whole process is automated for you.

8. Use Facebook’s custom and lookalike audiences to attract more people like your current audience.

You’ll need about 1,000 email subscribers for this to really work well, but once you’ve got them, there’s a way to upload your email list to Facebook. Then you can advertise to those same people on Facebook, or you can use those names to create a “lookalike audience” of folks who are like your subscribers.
Bonus: You can do similar things with Google’s  “Customer Match” via the Google display network. Or with Twitter’s “tailored audiences”. Oh yeah – and Yahoo offers the custom audiences feature, too.

9. Use Twitter’s lead generation cards.

If you’ve got the budget, this can be a great way to build your email list. Especially if you’re more into Twitter than you are into Facebook.

10. Run a Facebook contest to build your email list.

This works best if you’ve got a large following on Facebook, and you’d like to convert them into subscribers. If that sounds like you, see our recent article about how to run a Facebook contest.
Bonus: When you’ve got a winner, add a section about the contest to your next email update.

11. Use one of the social media overlay tools to add a prompt to join your list to everything you share online.

You share other people’s content on social media, right? It’s good for your authority, and it makes people more likely to follow you. But there’s one drawback: When people click on the link in the post you’ve shared – whoosh – they’re gone. Off to  somebody else’s site.
There’s a way to fix that. You can embed code in your social media links that creates a neat little overlay, like this:
And with tools like Snip.ly, you can add a call to action to join your email list in that overlay. Now everything you share becomes a micro squeeze page. Like this:

12. Got a new lead magnet? Announce it on social media.

I could just tell you, “Ask people to join your list from your social media posts.” But that’s not really enough. You’ve got to sweeten the pot. So anytime you’ve got a new lead magnet, make a big deal about it on social media. And – of course – include a link to sign up for your list.

What do you think?

That’s plenty of ideas to get you started. But I bet you can think of more. Want to share your cool idea? Speak up and leave a comment!

Social Media Trends You Should be Trying… and a Few You Should be Leaving Behind

ACROSS the globe, there are 2.6 billion social media users who connect to digital communities and companies through their platforms of choice. Reaching these people depends on your ability to keep up with the trends in a changing industry. Knowing whats current — and what isn’t— will help keep your business relevant, and your social media strategy worthwhile!
To make more connections, look toward new platforms, fresh strategies, and cutting-edge tips. This list of hot-or-not social media trends will point you in the right direction:

Trends to Try

1. Mobile Apps

Did you know that Americans spend 80% of their social media time on mobile devices? To succeed at growing your community, you need to share content that translates to smartphones and tablets. Incorporate visual content and short written blurbs into your strategy rather than focusing long-form articles.
Using this strategy will help optimize your content and not only keep mobile users engaged, but encourage repeat visits, more followers and higher interaction with your social media accounts!

2. Automated Social Media Marketing

As more social media platforms gain popularity — and it gets harder to manage them all — automated social media marketing has become indispensable to business owners. Use tools like Buffer or Hootsuite to plan posts in advance and align them with your marketing goals.
Automating your social media help increase your efficiency, save you time and not to worry — if you do it correctly, won’t sacrifice your personal touch!

3. Specialized Social Media Platforms

You target with traffic, right? Well, honing in with a specialized platform will streamline your strategy in the same way by enhancing your social media presence for users who are really interested in your niche.
Have you heard of Food52Gentlemint, or Learnist? Niche social platforms are viable opportunities to meet and connect with your ideal buyer. Do some research to uncover social networks that align with your industry and focus to see your engagement soar!

4. Social Shopping

TwitterFacebookInstagram, and Pinterest all recently upgraded their “buy buttons.” For brands, this means that e-commerce strategy needs to embed into a social media plan. Include in-line buy features to your social media accounts to bolster sales.
Providing direct, clickable buttons makes it much easier for interested social media users to take you up on your offers. Easy access means more sales, which is an obvious plus!

5. More Video

This year, Snapchat rose in prominence, Periscope and Meerkat gained traction, andInstagram lengthened their videos to 60 seconds. Now, Facebook is following suit. To make the most of the video trend, start using Facebook Live. You can share snippets of your day-to-day experiences and highlight your company’s offerings through video streaming on Facebook.
Videos give you more time to engage users and generally don’t take much longer than a photo to shoot. Sounds like a win-win, right?

Trends to Leave Behind

1. Viral Content

A lot of marketers focus on creating viral content, but it’s not as impactful as day-to-day engagement. Instead of focusing on making a one-time impact with a viral Tweet, resonate with your community by offering consistent posts with value and purpose.
Going viral may be great in the moment, but when users have lost interest in the flavor of the week, you’ll be there with consistent and reliable content they can turn to on a regular basis.

2. Private DMs

Have you ever followed someone on Twitter, only to receive a direct message, “Thanks for the follow. Please like me on Facebook and follow me on Instagram”? Don’t take this route. Rather than of forcing one person into more follows, focus on building your community organically by actively engaging with and sharing content from influencers.
Public posts take just as long as private, direct messages and reach a much broader audience. Don’t limit your reach — or waste your time!

3. Negativity

Many social media users embrace platforms as an opportunity to complain, making their mark with sarcasm and negativity. Although this strategy can help people “get seen”, it usually garners bad attention. As a marketer or a business person, always keep your posts upbeat and enjoyable to read.
People gravitate to positivity, and while you may get some initial reactions from negative posts, you don’t want to build your brand based on that. Your reputation on social media is established through recognition — don’t build it on negativity!

Wrapping It Up

Your social media presence can ultimately make or break your strategy, so be sure you stay in-the-know. These trends can transform your business, opening your social media channels up to new connections and burgeoning communities.
This month, try to incorporate or drop at least one of the ideas into your strategy. Follow this advice, and you’ll set yourself up for more positive interactions with your target audience!
Your turn: Which old-news tactic do you need to drop, and what will you be replacing it with? Let us know!

78 Per Cent of Facebook Q3 Ad Revenues from Mobile

mark-zuckerberg-at-f8-2015Facebook has posted revenues of $4.5bn (£2.9bn) for Q3 2015, up 40.5 per cent year-on-year, and profits of £1.5bn, up 4.4 per cent.
The vast majority of revenues came from advertising, some $4.3bn – and 78 per cent of that ($3.4bn) came from mobile, compared to 55 per cent in Q3 2014.
The social network now attracts 1.6bn monthly active users, with mobile accounting for 89.7 per cent (1.4bn) of them. Android alone accounts for over 1bn users, with 50m of those using Facebook Lite, the stripped-down version of the service created specifically for emerging markets.
“People have already shifted to mobile and this shift is driving engagement on Facebook,” said COO Sheryl Sandberg on the company’s earnings call. “The average American adult spends 25 per cent of their media time on mobile, and Facebook and Instagram together continue to account for over one in five minutes on mobile in the US. Businesses are lagging behind consumers in making this shift to mobile, and we believe we’re well positioned to help them catch up.”
During the earnings call, it was also revealed that Facebook now sees 8bn daily views of video content, and more than 500m users watching videos every day. The format has been adopted even by small businesses, 1.5m of which posted a video – either as organic content or an ad – in September.

Mobile CPMs Now Higher And Growing Faster Than Desktop [Study]

A new study finds mobile CPMs are outpacing desktop, with growth coming foremost from iOS mobile app ads.

mobile-phone-scrolling-ss-1920
Mobile CPMs are not only growing faster, but they were higher than desktop CPMs in Q3 2015, according to a new study from programmatic supply-side platform PubMatic.
Relative CPMs were 34 percent higher on mobile devices and rose 12.4 percent, compared to 10.4 percent for desktop, in the third quarter of this year. Rich media and video ad formats were leading contributors to the higher CPMs, finds the report.
CPM increased across both the mobile Web and mobile apps, the exception being tablet Web, which saw CPMs decline by 26 percent year over year.
“From our perspective, the ‘mobile gap’ between mobile usage and ad spending is closed. Improved mobile infrastructure, advanced targeting tools and better overall customer experience capabilities have enabled media organizations to take better advantage of their mobile revenue opportunities,” said Rajeev Goel, co-founder and CEO of PubMatic, in a statement.
The surge is driven most dramatically by in-app ads on iOS devices. Publishers saw CPMs on iOS app ads increase 109 percent year over year, compared to just 11 percent for Android app ads. In fact, the mobile Web outpaced Android’s CPM growth, with a 30 percent increase.
Looking at impression growth opportunities, iOS apps delivered a 133-percent increase in impression volume year over year. Among Android apps, impression volume increased 42 percent, and mobile Web impressions grew 24 percent. Tablet impressions jumped 44 percent, even as advertisers paid less per impression in Q3 2015 than they did the previous year.
mobile platform cpms and impression inventory pubmatic
The study finds big opportunity for growth in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) and Latin America regions. CPMs were down in these regions for the year, but largely driven by the fact that impression volume saw triple-digit growth. In these regions, mobile phone adoption and mobile content consumption are rapidly rising.
“Early phases of mobile advertising typically focus on app installs, which are heavily performance-based, but as brand advertisers come into the space, CPMs will rise” in Latin America and Asia-Pacific markets, the report predicts.

Zero To 6 Figures In Just 6 Months

It takes many ingredients to become successful… in any sphere that you operate in. I'm an avid reader of a number of online and offline books, magazines, blogs…. anything in fact – and I'm always looking for that extra 1% that could make the difference. I stumbled across the post below, whilst reading Entrepreneur.com recently, and it relates so much to my personal experiences that I thought I'd re-produce it here.
For those of you unfamiliar with my story….. and I guess that could be most of you reading this :-)  I messed around online for years… like most people do. However my crunch came when I got into a massive financial mess when a House Builder ran off with all of our money. Which meant that we had to borrow even more money AND find a trustworthy builder to complete the project…. effectively paying twice for the original building project.
So a little over 2 years ago I started to work seriously (only on a part-time basis), on my Online Business. Looking back now, a lot of what Peter talks about below, I did as well. But the key to my success was in finding people who could "cut through the crap" (sorry for the language), and just show me exactly what to do. This turned it around for me….. and I shortly gave up my offline job and devoted even more time to my Online Business.
The result was $107,000 in my first full year working online !!
I now have a number of different fingers in different pies, but my passion is still with teaching, coaching and mentoring. I used to do this on an adhoc, one-2-one basis, but now I've created what I know is the internets best Online "Point & Click" Coaching Program. In this program I will show you exactly how you to can go from Zero to your own 6 figure income…. within months – NOT YEARS.
Anyway, enough of me, lets read what Peter has to say.
NOTE: Peter went from Zero to 6 figures in just 6 months. He now has an 8 million dollar business – and he is only 27 years old.
PVAs entrepreneurs we know life is often a roller coaster with lots of uncertainty and chaos. When you’re in the struggle, it’s tough to see a clear path to success, but it’s crucial to let your vision guide you, not your current circumstances. You must embrace those challenges, because that’s where your hunger for a better life is developed.
Nobody wants to be broke, and nobody wants to struggle, but it’s part of the process. It’s asking the right questions, and taking the right action while in the struggle, that can change everything. When I was in my toughest spot I was dead broke but six months later I was earning a six figure income. What it took to make the change is available to everyone.

Absolute clarity.

It's easy to make decisions once you determine what your real values are.
Reflecting back on the lowest points of my life, I’ve realized I didn’t take responsibility for anything. I was playing the victim role. I was blaming the economy, my company, lack of resources and my location. I soon realized my focus was jaded and what I needed to change was myself. The moment I got clear on that, my life shifted from complexity to simplicity.
Clarity is the ultimate power, and if you want results you’ve never had you need to get 100 percent clear on what you want. Only when you take full responsibility for your current reality can you change it. Minimalism is a great way to run your business, and a great way to run your life. Get rid of the messes and noise in your head and figure out who you are, what you want and what you must give up to get there.

Your Confidence Account.

Insecurities will destroy you, while real confidence will take you to a level very few attain.
An interesting thing happens when you start to gain clarity. Your confidence follows. If you don’t have confidence, you will always find a way to lose. Everything you accomplish is based on the confidence you have in yourself and your ability to “make it happen.” The bigger the goals, the bigger the challenges.
You must realize the moment you go after your biggest goals, obstacles will show up. They are there to test your character and faith, and to see if you are serious about your goals. The person with the most confidence always wins. When I got clear on the actions needed to start thriving, I felt my motivation and energy elevate. These days, the only security you have is the confidence in yourself and your ability to make things happen.

Shifting your circle of influence.

There comes a point in your life when you realize who really matters, who never did and who always will.
Once you get clear on who you are and what you want, you must re-evaluate your Circle of Influence. Who you associate with is who you become. The term "role model'' is not used enough in our society. It’s extremely important to have role models. A role model will raise your standards. A role model will not let you get complacent. Finding a role model or mentor will spark your mind because they are playing the game at a higher level than you are.
If you hang around five confident people, you will be the sixth.
If you hang around five intelligent people, you will be the sixth.
If you hang around five millionaires, you will be the sixth.
If you hang around five idiots, you will be the sixth.
If you hang around five broke people, you will be the sixth.
It’s inevitable.
Such a simple concept, but what a difference it can make on your performance and business. There’s no faster way to advance into the top 5 percent of your industry than this. Yet, most people don’t do it. I challenge you to find those people, because you’ll become a lot like the people you spend the most time with. Their belief systems, their ways of being and their attitudes are contagious. Once you elevate your peer group, your standards will follow.

Crafting your ideal result rituals.

The amount of stress you have in your life is in direct correlation to the lack of rituals you have in place!
Without the right rituals and habits, your long-term growth will be stunted. Once I learned where my results were coming from, I created "result rituals'' that moved my business forward. Intentional action is the only thing that will get you out of the struggle. I had been working 60 to 70 hours a week, but nothing seemed to change until I started asking myself what the 20 percent of activities I needed to focus on that created 80 percent of my results. Then I organized my schedule around those priorities.
The greatest wisdom of all time is in astutely choosing what not to do with your time. Say "no'' more than you say ''yes''. Don’t be a slave to your phone. Design everything around the lifestyle you want, not for the convenience of other people.
There has never been a better time in the history of our economy to create your ideal life. Whether you're in the midst of struggle or thriving, I encourage you to continue challenging yourself. When you make a definite decision on what kind of person you will be, on an everyday basis, you start to gain control of your financial destiny. If you continue to choose growth in the moment, and show up better than you were yesterday, you will astound yourself at what you can accomplish. You're a lot closer to six figures than you think.

Most Shared Content from US Digital Newspapers July 2015

search-sumo
BuzzSumo’s best of July rankings show which digital newspapers got the most attention on social media, which stories performed best, and which top stories performed better on less traditional sites.
The nytimes.com leads the way among digital newspapers in total shares and average shares, followed by washingtonpost.com, usatoday.com and latimes.com.
Slide1My list of the top 10 digital papers was drawn from the US papers listed in a recent Pew Research Report, “Top 25 Newspapers by Digital Traffic,” a compilation based on the number of unique visitors in January 2015.
Of the top five papers, the nytimes.com also had the most shares for their top 10 most shared stories.
Slide1Based on this month’s social share data, nydailynews.com and latimes.com could soon overtake usatoday.com in the top 3 most popular digital newspapers.
Overall shares for the newspapers’ 10 most popular articles were dominated by the number of times readers liked, commented, or shared content on Facebook. Sharing activity on all other networks combined was dwarfed by the engagement on Facebook.
To illustrate the significance of Facebook sharing, I compared the most tweeted story for each newspaper on Twitter with the most shared story on Facebook for each newspaper.
In every case, the number of shares for the most popular article on Facebook was at least 94 percent higher than the most tweeted article on Twitter.
network comparison
Characteristics of news coverage at top three papers:
Readers at each of the top three papers preferred to share content of different lengths and different types.
Of the big three digital papers, readers at nytimes.com liked longer content, 3,000-10,000 words, while readers at usatoday.com opted to share shorter pieces, 1,000-2,000 words. But, this word length is a bit of an anomaly for usatoday.com. For the year as a whole, readers there opted to share longer form content more often.
The preferred type of content for social sharing also varied. “What” posts (articles with headlines beginning with “What”) were shared more overall by Washington Post readers. At the New York Times, “Why” posts were shared more frequently.
Finally the most popular weekday for social sharing on Facebook was Thursday for both nytimes.com and washingtonpost.com. Readers of usatoday.com were more like to share on Wednesday.
At the nytimes.com, four of the top 10 pieces of content were blog posts, another was published in the New York Times Magazine, and another was an interactive game.
The same trend held true for washingtonpost.com. Seven of their top 10 most shared articles were blog posts.
Two of the top five most shared stories from the leading papers had a clear link to other news articles.
Specifically, the issue of protecting endangered animals, which was also highlighted in a speech by President Barack Obama in Kenya about new restrictions on the sale of elephant ivory, and the death of Cecil the Lion at the hands of an American hunter.
top fiveWhile these traditional papers didn’t get the most shares for breaking these stories, their analysis was well-shared.

As someone who spends a lot of time on social media, I was surprised that three stories I remember vividly from July didn’t get their viral coverage from the big three traditional papers. Instead, stories about the killing of Cecil the Lion, Planned Parenthood’s alleged sale of fetal tissue, and Donald Trump’s bid for the presidency gained entrance to a substantial number of social conversations via other news outlets.
Content published about Donald Trump during July was shared an average of 2,426 times, more than the average for all content at any of the three top digital papers.
Most of those shares came from conservativetribune.com, huffintonpost.com, and breitbart.com.
Domains with the most social shares for content about Donald Trump
chartContent about the American hunter who killed Cecil the Lion were slightly less popular, averaging 2,229 shares. Many of those shares came from domains outside of the US, notably from dailymail.co.uk and theguardian.com.
Domains with the most social shares for content about Cecil the Lion
chart (1)
Articles about Planned Parenthood’s alleged sale of fetal tissue were shared less often on average than stories about Cecil or Donald, but with 1,261 average shares the topic still generated more social interest, as measured by average shares, than content at washingtonpost.com or usatoday.com
There was some overlap in the domains from which Planned Parenthood content and Donald Trump content got the most shares, both gained a significant number of shares from breitbart.com
Domains with the most social shares for content about Planned Parenthood
chart (2)Getting the attention of a power user on Twitter can help to drive social shares of content. (Duh!)
For example, the nytimes.com story “Illuminating the plight of endangered species,” was boosted by 55 backlinks, but it also got big push from Leonardo DiCaprio, who tweeted the link on July 30. DiCaprio, whose 13,263,000+ Twitter followers @leodicaprio place him firmly in the top 100 of all Twitter accounts, is an influencer extraordinaire. People retweet anything from @leodicaprio an average of 1,113 times, and his Klout score is 88.

10 Ways To Increase Facebook Engagement

Facebook is arguably the most important content and amplification channel. Recent surveys have found that up to 25% of all traffic to websites is now driven by Facebook posts.
We are very excited to launch our new Facebook tool to help agencies, brands and publishers to maximize their Facebook engagement. With this new functionality you can analyze the top posts on Facebook for any topic, gain insights into what is working and generate ideas to improve your own performance.
Simply login to your BuzzSumo account, go to Content Research > Facebook and try out some of the techniques and tips we have set out below. If you are not a BuzzSumo customer sign up for a 14 day free trial, no card required and start improving your Facebook engagement today.

10 Ways To Increase Facebook Engagement

1. Generate Ideas for Engaging Facebook Posts

Whatever topic you are writing about, or promoting, you are sure to find inspiring ideas by looking at the most engaging FB posts for your topic. Just type in your topic, hit Analyze and browse the top posts in the results for ideas.
For example, we took a look at some of the Halloween questions that have been engaging Facebook users recently. We set the time filter to last month and the post type to question; and here are our results.
halloweenImmediately we can see the type of questions that are engaging audiences and you might want to steal some of these ideas, for example the post “Which Halloween movie is your favourite?” was shared 29,000 times.

2. Check Out Trending Topics

We can check that Halloween is an engaging topic by looking at the trends using the Analyze tab. If we simply type in Halloween and then hit the Analyze tab we can see that public posts mentioning Halloween were liked, commented on or shared nearly 25m times in September. This has risen to almost 40m interactions with a full two weeks still to go before Halloween. Posts about Halloween could get well over 100m likes and shares before the end of the month. It seems people like to share Halloween content.
facebook halloween-interactions

3. Find Great Content to Share

One of the proven ways to increase your Facebook engagement is to share content that is already resonating with audiences. Simply set the BuzzSumo Facebook filter to 24 hours and type in a topic to see what posts have been gaining the most traction in the last day.
For example, we looked at posts about new startups to find the posts resonating the most in the last 24 hours. You can see the results below. Thus if my audience is interested in startups these could be good posts to share.
startup content

4. Identify and Analyze Trends For Pages and Topics

The analysis tab is great for tracking trends. We have already seen this with Halloween above, however, we can also track events and campaigns. For example if we type in the name of Donald Trump’s Facebook page (DonaldTrump) and click ‘analyze by page’ we can see that likes, comments and shares of his published posts appeared to peak in July at 6.5m and have flatlined since, with around 1m interactions so far in October.
trump-facebook
By comparison interaction with posts published by Ben Carson (FB page realbencarson) rose to over 8m in September and are close to 4m already in October.
carson-facebook
Using the Facebook analysis tool we can also see interactions with any posts mentioning Ben Carson (not just those his page has published) have also risen sharply.
You can look at trends for any topic or Facebook public page.
