How to Capture Video from Your Tablet

Back when Kelly Rush, one of TechSmith’s Associate Program Managers, originally wrote this post in 2012, it was pretty difficult to get a screen recording off an iPad or tablet. I recently talked to Kelly about the method he currently uses to record screen video from iPads, Android devices, and other tablets to see how the process has changed. If you’d like to take a trip down memory lane, we’ve saved his original video on YouTube. Thankfully, capturing video from your tablet is not nearly as complicated as it used to be!

How to mirror your tablet onto your desktop

The easiest way to capture video from your tablet is to use a mirroring app—an app that makes your device screen show up on your desktop or laptop computer screen. Once your device is mirrored, you can record its screen using Camtasia. If you already have Camtasia for Mac and an iOS device, you can skip the apps altogether and record straight from Camtasia (check out this tutorial to learn how!). If not, no worries. There’s bound to be an app out there that fits your needs.
Below I’ll go over how to use a few popular mirroring apps. You’ll notice that some of these apps have screen recording built right in. If you choose an app with that feature, remember, you can still pull your recordings into Camtasia for editing.
